Senior adults are staying put unless a family member decides to set up living off grid and helps them move. They have their friends, doctors and other emenities in cities and towns and most are unable to make a major move.
Although I have been "off the grid" since May 2022 and totally dependent on solar, I don't have the luxury of negotiating with the local monopolies in the utilities area. With a SSI payment of $311.00 a month, and the local power company wants a $349.00 deposit just to turn the power back on (but they continue to ignore my request to remove their "Smart Meter". On the Propane end, the local companies adopted a "policy" of a 100 gallon minimum (at least $350.00) and they refuse to service smaller tanks. I have a 42 gallon RV tank that they won't touch because it's not worth their time, so I have to take smaller propane bottles into town to meet those cooking and heating needs.
A truly great breakdown of the necessities. The best bet, of course, is to be in a rural and remote location and totally off grid. This was the option I took in my high mountain, tiny home setup. I am only dependent on the propane delivery service. It’s a beautiful thing to be certain…
The idea that taxes and electricity will outstrip principal and interest as a percentage of a typical house payment, is coming to a theater near you soon. The idea of an off grid faraday residence is a really good idea. Some solar, some firewood, some propane, some generator power, in a well insulated and EMF frequency protected small footprint, with a root cellar and a garden is the best we can do to protect ourselves going forward. Our modern standard of living is heavily dependent on electricity. While off-grid electrical systems are nice to have, they tend to be very expensive and susceptible to equipment failures. Particularly given the risk of an EMP (either man made or due to a solar flare) that could fry both centralized and decentralized electrical systems, I encourage people to set up parallel systems for heating, cooking, food preservation, lighting, water and sanitation that do not require electricity at all.
For instance, a rain barrel can provide a back-up water supply. There are modern wood cookstoves still in production to this day that provide for cooking, baking and heating in the winter. There are even refrigerators and freezers that run on propane rather than electricity. They are expensive but not as expensive as installing a whole-house generator or off-grid solar panel system.
As long as you have electricity that's great. But if you lose it these parallel systems will allow you to transition to non-electric alternatives with minimal inconvenience. If you plan ahead, you can more or less maintain a modern standard of living without electricity. You may still want some small backup system for charging your cell phone, laptop, etc. during a power outage but that is much easier and cheaper to do with solar (such as with a small, portable solar charging unit) than trying to power an entire house. I've lived and worked off grid and its FAR more complicated than most people realize! One farm was a build school and were commercially certified solar installers. The farm ran on solar in Tucson where sun is plentiful year round. We had a huge tower of batteries for back-up power. One day of xhemtrails would knock out our power for days on end. Then the aquaponics system would fail and food would spoil because fridges were down.
Redundancy is your friend!.
Most importantly, if you plan to live off grid, you MUST get offline. Podcasting or even just researching on the internet all day consumes too much energy.

I know several people that took smaller tanks in town to get them refilled like Tractor supply, etc.
